Acid attacks - a work hazard for delivery drivers

Delivery manMost people face relatively few hazard-based risks at work. If you work in an office, you may risk getting sore eyes from poor lighting, or if you’re a chef, you may risk getting the odd cut or burn – these risks exist, although they aren’t likely to be catastrophic injuries that require long-term care.

For food delivery drivers in London, the profession used to face little hazard-based risks, but in recent years, there is an increased concern about a new hazard: acid attack. In fact, just a few months ago, two separate incidents involving food delivery drivers being doused with acid grabbed the headlines.

Deliveroo, a major food delivery service company operates in the UK, has taken precautions by installing GoPro cameras on the rider’s helmets and hiring 50 more employees dedicated to rider safety. Previously, employees said they ran their own ‘watchdog’ scheme where attacked riders would call out their location on the messenger app WhatsApp after an attack, and their colleagues would rush to the scene to assist. The most important thing you can do in such a tragic event is to drench the victim in running water.

Acid attack is a form of violent assault as the harmful substance can cause catastrophic injuries - acid in the eyes can lead to permanent disability like blindness, acid in the face can disfigure the victim, acid in the skin can damage the skin tissues and even dissolving the bones. Usually the victims will face many rounds of surgical treatments and long-term physical challenges. On top of these, there are psychological challenges as well.

If you know someone who suffers from such catastrophic injuries like an acid attack, help them by seeking advice from a catastrophic injury expert. Get a good, reliable catastrophic injury solicitor who puts the victim first; a solicitor who would fight to assure the victim that help is on the way should they lose the ability to work and/or if they require long-term care.

In some cases, the victim of an accident or attack may only become aware of the full extent of their injuries later in life, as they realise their recovery have not gone as well as expected. They might settle for an amount shortly after the injury and find years later that this does not actually cover their loss of earnings. In some cases, the physical injury might heal, but leave permanent psychological scars that affect daily life. This is why we suggest you go to a specialist injury solicitor straight away. At CCH & Co., our personal injury solicitors have years of experience in handling catastrophic injury cases and will not settle for less than our client deserves.

If you know someone who has suffered a severe injury, don’t hesitate to get in touch – the sooner you contact us, the sooner we can work to get you the compensation you deserve. We will keep you informed about your case and make our best effort to provide a personal, sympathetic service. To find out how CCH & Co.
